My Voice Alert System just went off telling me that someone was entering my driveway. This reminded me of what happened here at my home about two years ago. I was home alone working out on the treadmill in the basement. The back door was closed but not locked.
Sometime before this occurred I had installed the Voice Alert System, a Wireless Driveway Alarm device that could let me know if someone was approaching my home. The sensor was placed outside to watch the driveway and send a signal to the receiver advising of someone approaching my home. You just program the receiver in your own voice to signal a problem. Example: “Someone is in the driveway”. You can place up to 6 total sensors around your home, programming each one to advise you what is taking place outside. You could place a sensor in your RV or boat signaling entry into that unit. Many people leave their garage door open during the day while they are home.
You could place a sensor at the entry to the garage advising you of someone going inside.
Well back to the story. The Voice Alert System went off and then I heard someone open the back door. I assumed it was my wife stopping by to pick up something before going on an appointment. I yelled that I was downstairs on the treadmill and would be up in a few minutes. I heard someone walking through the kitchen then down the hallway to the bedroom. The person then walked to the back door and closed it on the way out. I did not think too much about it and completed my walk and then went upstairs.
Upon my wife’s return I ask her why she did not say anything when she came home or wait for me to come upstairs. She told me that she did not come home before her appointment and that it must have been someone else.
We checked the house to see if anything was missing, however everything was still there and nothing was out of place. We told out neighbors about it but we did not notify law enforcement.
About 7:00 pm the next day my neighbor came upstairs from his basement and found a female 25-35 year old standing in his hallway. He asked her what she was doing (I cleaned that up nicely) in his home. The female gave some excuse about the wrong house and the neighbor escorted her outside. She then ran down the street and got into a vehicle and left the area.
Being a former Police Officer and alarm company owner I thought I had taken all the precautions necessary to protect my home and family with an alarm system, Wireless Driveway Alarm, and motion lights outside just to name a few. My BIG mistake was that I was too trusting. I left my back door unlocked during the day. This unknown person was counting on just that. Counting on me to leave the door unlocked so that they could walk in, find something sitting on the counter or table such as a laptop computer, a purse or maybe a check book and then walk on out without ever being seen.
Not any more! I keep my door locked, even during the day and whenever my Voice Alert System, Wireless Driveway Alarm goes off I walk to the door to see who is there…because you never know.
