Yes, it’s been around for awhile, but I watched it for the first time tonight, and I really got a kick out of it. My daughter loves this movie and has wanted me to watch it. Jerry Seinfeld, who co-wrote and produced this movie, was a perfect Barry Benson, who with all his good intentions to right what he believed to be a wrong, almost destroys what Mother Nature intended. Barry believed that humans had stolen honey from his society, the bees, and he decided to sue the humans to free the worker bees that were controlled by the humans and to get all the honey back that belonged to the bees. He thought if he could accomplish this that he would help his fellow bees, so they wouldn’t have to work so hard and literally to death.
Barry’s friends were mostly supportive; though I don’t think they were too happy with him when it all went wrong. Barry had his day in court and won.
All the honey was removed from store shelves and everywhere that humans could get their hands on it. The worker bees were freed and the honey was returned to Barry’s bee family, which, in turn, gave them a surplus of honey, and it was futile for them to continue to “produce” it anymore. This lack of busy bee made these disciplined and hardworking creatures feel useless and lost.
Barry did not know how nature operated and that he and his bee family were part of the cycle that is nature. Belatedly he realized, due to the bees no longer pollinating flowers and vegetables, how this affected the natural way of things for everyone and the result was the demise of all plants and vegetation. Well, with a little human help and the heroic assistance of his fellow bees, Barry saved the day and brought life back to all the vegetation through pollination. All was well and right again, and today, Barry and his friend, the Mosquito, are attorneys fighting for the rights of their fellow animals and creepy-crawlies.
The lesson here is “you don’t mess with Mother Nature”. As a bible quote I know avows, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven”.
