26 MarWill This Be the Last Standard and Poors Downgrade in the US? I Do Not Think So

This week has been a roller coaster ride for anyone involved in politics. The Democrats and Republicans came together to pass a bill that did little if anything to solve the economic problems facing our country today or in the future. As a result S&P downgraded the credit status of the US from triple A to AA+. The country got a triple A rating back in 1917 and has held it since, at least till we got a Keynesian believer into the White House and an inept and ineffectual Congress that could not pull its head of its posterior if its life depended on it.

Many people on the Left are wrongfully trying to say that our downgraded credit rating was due to the Tea party and the Republicans standing up to no new tax increases. They wrongfully call these tax increases, revenue increases as if that will disguise the fact of what the true nature of these malicious and overbearing weights on the backs of the working class really are. The credit downgrade from S&P came not because of the lack of tax increases and an ever increasing encroachment of the Democrats to want to rape and pillage the working people of this nation. But because the Republicans fell short of the stated goal of 4 trillion dollars in cuts.

It was a tragedy to have only 1 trillion in cuts in this bill, with the promise of 1.5 trillion come November when the super congress is supposed to begin. Standard and Poor’s told us that they wanted to see cuts that were inline with the debt commissions report, you know the one that Obama talked up as the next best thing to slice bread? And how it was going to make those tough decisions to get us out of the mess that his cronies and ideological proponents like George Bush put us in? The debt commission called for 4 trillion in cuts over 10 years, and Paul Ryan’s plan called for 4 trillion in cuts. Both of those were submitted as reasons why S&P downgraded our credit rating and they stated they would not have done so if serious strides were made to curb our national debt problem. Make no mistake about it, if the Congress would have done its job and passed 4 trillion dollars in cuts, we would not have had our credit rating take a hit.

It is because of the lack of leadership from both houses of congress, the Democrats for believing that 1 trillion is sufficient when they plan to spend 10 trillion over the same 10 year period. And the Republicans for giving up on the principles that got them the house in 2010. They were not sent to Washington so they could give away the farm a little slower, they were sent to stop the out right theft of our future generations wealth. And President Present that the S&P saw that for what it was and they downgraded the US credit rating, it was because of this lack of leadership on both sides and not because one group of people wanted to do that right thing and make substantial cuts over a 10 year period after they have already overspent by that same amount after 3 years.

There are people who believe that this is nothing big, or that S&P had its numbers wrong. The truth is that whether S&P was right or wrong matters little. What matters is how it is perceived and right now it is not perceived as a good thing. Our stock market has returned to where it was before the beginning of 2011. It gave up all of the gains it has made and is now entering correction territory. Where will it stop? This is the problem with having our credit downgraded and I fear that it will be downgraded again in November or soon after when it is found that the Republicans and Democrats have no intention of cutting themselves off from the crack, that is known as American tax dollars.

12 MayAmbien should be replaced by talk therapy

Looking around the journals published so far in 2010, it’s clear the research community is finally beginning to challenge the assumption that America should be medicated. If you listen to the pharmaceutical industry and the doctors who are paid to stand up and promote drugs as the best treatment for any disorder, you will hear a consistent pattern of propaganda. All our products have the FDA seal of approval. The clinical trials show our products are safe and effective. The health insurance industry pays most of the price for our products. Take our pills and get better. Indeed, when it comes to the top-selling sleeping pills, there are record numbers of prescriptions being written by doctors. The reason? Well, its not hard to suspect stress levels are increasing thanks to the recession. Unemployment is high. Credit levels have been reduced, There are foreclosures in every neighborhood. That’s bound to make sleep more difficult. What’s curious about the new records being set in the number of prescriptions is the additional financial burden this places on families when they can least afford it, and the implied assumption that sleeping pills can cure the underlying social and economic problems causing the stress.

The Journal of the American Medical Association reports talk therapy is more effective than sleeping pills. The research team gave the participants sleeping pills alongside therapy sessions and measured which had the better outcome. Because the talk asked why people were finding it difficult to sleep and discussed ways of resolving problems, people with the therapy sessions had better sleep than those on pills. This follows on research testing the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy which teaches people how to change their habit patterns to restore sleep. Therapists encourage people to avoid naps during the day, adopt a set routine for going to bed, and physically change the bedroom to minimize light and noise that might disturb sleep. When combined with techniques to address the cause of stress and relax, CBT has consistently been found to outperform sleeping pills.

When you look at the statistics, there can be little doubt we use too many sleeping pills. Add in the increasing use of online pharmacies which supply drugs without the need for a prescription, and the scale of reliance on sleeping pills is almost certainly worse than we imagine. Why should we care? Because all the sleeping pills on the market can cause dependence. As people continue to take them, tolerance builds and the pills actually become less effective. Increasing the dose confirms the dependence and can lead to unwanted side effects. Yes, ambien is one of the better pills and there are fewer problems with its use, but if your insomnia has been disrupting your life for six months or more, you should consider undergoing therapy first. CBT is clearly the best. To help you focus during this learning period, your doctor may offer the use of a sleeping pill. If you decide to accept, ambien is the best but you should only take it for a few weeks at low dose. The long-term restoration of sleep is going to come from the therapy. Although this is a short-term cost to meet, your life will improve with natural sleep and your finances will be better of without having to buy sleeping pills for the rest of your life.
